You’d have a harder time telling Balderdash not to dance.

very graceful dance moves doodled in a car

The beautiful, graceful, showstopping…

That’s right!

...also known as “the squat”.

Alois considered himself an afficionado of corvids, raves, crows, magpies and the like. But, dancing as one? A bit different to his usual fare.

He’d already made the bouncer annoyed, so he had to get to work quickly. There was only one dance move that came to mind, and he had to get started.

He clapped his paws together, then pulled them back as though they were wings. He shuffled his feet as though he were walking forwards, but he stayed in place. He made a few flaps, before chapiing his hands again, pointing at the bouncer, and finally coming to a stop to cross his arms over his chest with a smug grin.

Miraculously, the bouncer let him through, mumbling about how he needed a raise.

Complete with highlighters for some neon.

Rosey wasn’t much of a dancer, so her attempt at it more so amounted to frantic flailing and flapping. Hopefully the ravens wouldn’t mind

Komet centered his glasses and flashed a coy smile at the bouncer, pulling out a pink folded fan. He flicked his wrist to extend the fan, waving it in front of his face for some time. He shook his hips in a seductive fashion, his tail curling around like a rainbow striped serpent behind him. Then Komet spun around, holding the fan to his chest as he extended and flicked his other hand, before stopping to face the bouncer once more with a wink and fan flutter in front of his maw again to signify the end of the sequence. The bouncer looks unimpressed but nevertheless lets Komet through to the rave.

Time to dance! Swoosh swoosh!

Dancing? That is not a thing Orion has tried since being imperfectly carved back to life. He isn’t certain he can give an adequate performance. Better to allow the line to continue pushing past him, because presumably the more examples he observes, the better he might imitate them. Yet as ravens approach the burly guard, they each do something something different from the last. He perceives no reason or meaning in their movements.

Dancing…

There is the faintest twinge of something deep, deep in his mind. It’s so vague it’s almost gone before he can catch it. But no—he remembers. Something from before the long sleep, something from when he had been fully flesh.

His eyes drift shut and he holds his arms out to embrace an invisible partner. He doesn’t remember who they are, but they’re in his mind somewhere, buried under layers of stone. And his feet begin to move. He doesn’t know what he’s doing, but his body seems to. The thumping music fades from his awareness, replaced by strings that sing out a dainty, complex melody.

The memory moves him in a precise pattern of steps. Step, slide, step. Turn, step, slide, step. Repeat. His movements are stiff but sure. He takes his long-lost partner in a circle, and finally, as they return to their starting position, reality returns. The deep bass recalls him to where he is. He opens his eyes and clears his throat, suddenly self-conscious. “I believe that was… some form of dance?”

“A dance move?” Liu Yu’s eyes light up, and Nine can already see it: he’s jumped at the opportunity to show off. “I have a good one! Stand back.” The bouncer obliges, stepping back and watching curiously as Liu Yu stretches.

Nine knows all of Liu Yu’s moves, but he’s not sure which one this is going to be. All he’s sure is that Liu Yu isn’t going to choose an easy one, because why would he? He’s a professional and it’s obvious that he intends to show it off. Watching as Liu Yu lifts a leg, Nine considers the possibilities: the spin? The split? The… oh, yeah, that one.

The first ninety-degree angle doesn’t shock the raven, but when Liu Yu starts lifting his leg higher, the bouncer looks a little more interested. And by the time he brings it to twelve o’clock for the perfect mid-air split, the bouncer’s clapping. He could have stopped there, but predictably, he does the full circle — and after watching it all these times, Nine still hasn’t quite figured out he manages that second half.

The bouncer’s impressed enough that he doesn’t even ask Nine to pay the toll too, just ushering them both in afterwards. Laughing at Liu Yu’s expectant gaze, Nine gives him the kiss on his cheek he’s asking for as they step into crowd. Having a really, really good dancer for a partner definitely came with an unexpected boon today.

Aura takes a step back and looks at Aiden who gives him a helpless shrug. “A dance move… what nonsense. I’m a model, famously, why should I have to pay a toll to get into a club.” Aura sounds decidedly put out by this before he shrugs and holds out his hand to Aiden. His boyfriend seems to be amused at his plight but stops when the hand is offered. He is hesitant but does eventually put his hand in Aura’s.

The blue haired male smiles and pulls him forward, twirling him inward and then outward and then inward again to dip and kiss him before he’s standing them back up. He sways his hips, hands on Aiden’s shoulders for a moment before he slides down and pops back up, leg hooking over Aiden’s hip in the process. The movements are wild and erratic at best a combination of swing dance mixed with jazz perhaps, it’s difficult to tell. Aura grins as he twists himself around Aiden as if Aiden was a poll and not a whole person. It becomes clear that Aiden is much less a dance partner in this and much more a prop. At the end of it Aura has Aiden’s hands in his and is holding on as he breaks into a complete split at his boyfriend’s feet. He pulls the other male down and over him to kiss him again.

“Good enough?” He asks and it is more to Aiden than to the bouncer who is staring wide eyed with a gaping jaw. That was more like a whole dance, but Aura never does things by halves.

Oh heck no- Halite sighs and flicks her tail nervously. She flares up her fins, bends down, and spins in a circle. It was the mating dance her tribe would do, but she always thought it was stupid. Well, no turning back now! She continued to spin until she reached 50 circles, then stood up and, with her fins still flared, thrashed her tail and shook her wrists.

A Raven Ballet! Not sure that’s the type of dance that’ll get anybody into the cavern, though..

“Moves?” Circuit repeated. She had no idea what kind of dance would “fit in” with the ravens. Honestly, she didn’t even know if she could dance. She always went flailing her limbs about and called it dancing, though no one ever told her it wasn’t. The Ineki was incredibly excited and eager to give it a shot. So much so that electrical sparks were flying off her fur, prompting some ravens in the line to step back a few paces. She bounced side to side on her paws as she thought of something.

“All right, I think I have something,” Circuit declared, standing up on her hindquarters to better mimic a raven’s posture. She hopped once in place, turning to the left slightly. Then she hopped again, spreading her mechanical wings and holding them diagonally. Next, she jumped on the spot again, though this time Circuit turned all the way to the right. Hopping again, she repeated the motion of holding her wings out diagonally. Lastly, she jumped, turning to face the bouncer before hopping for a final time, raising her wings to make a sort of circle shape with them. She would have liked to spread her tails out in a fan shape to go with the pose, but she didn’t have them all anymore. To substitute, she moved her mechanical one in a wide arc and hoped it would portray the same idea.

Returning to having all four paws on the ground, she looked expectantly at the raven bouncer, “How’s that?”

Fahx watches the strange bird for a moment then laughs. He loves to dance so this is a piece of cake for him. He swishes his tails then stands on his tippy toes and strikes a daring pose then twirls once and slides to the right, then to the left and shakes his shoulders. He claps once and stomps his left foot, then claps again and stomps his right foot, losing himself to the rave and music in his head. He admittedly forgets the bird is even there until it caws at him to stop. He sheepishly stops and rubs the back of his neck.

Lyric gasps in excitement, gently bouncing into the air. “First you give me these gorgeous bracelets, and now I get to dance for you?”

She flicks her wrists, gesturing to the other ravens to make room for her. She clasps her hands together at her chest, then flings her arms out to her sides, narrowly missing a couple ravens who didn’t move quickly enough. As they squawk in displeasure, Lyric chirps “Sorry!” and begins to twirl, waving her arms over her head and back to her sides. She springs to one side, then springs to the other, spinning in place as she lands.

When Lyric starts to incorporate kicks into her routine, the bouncer tells her that that’s enough — in her excitement, Lyric has nearly injured some of the other birds in line, and it’s apparent that she’ll continue the dance ad nauseam if she isn’t immediately stopped. Lyric thanks the bouncer and hops into the venue. She punctuates her entrance with jazz hands as she walks into the cavern.

Limewire was just wandering and thinking, letting his paws carry him where they would, when he was suddenly in the middle of a line of big black birds.  Ravens.  He didn’t even notice, so lost in his own thoughts, until he started to hear the thump of that bass—and realized it was not, in fact, coming from his own pair of headphones.  It was louder than that.

Ears perked, Limewire looked up—and realized one of the ravens had been trying to get his attention for the past minute, at least.  He apologized profusely but asked if he could check out the club.

Apparently, they’d let you in if you showed off a dance move.

Now, Limewire loved dancing, of course, and he lit up at the request—but he knew he couldn’t just bust out any old move.  It would have to be something that fit in at a rave populated by literal birds.  A real challenge, then!

Limewire started with something simple—arcing his hands like they were wings.  Not in a ridiculous way, like someone trying to imitate a chicken might, nor in the way of someone trying to ape an eagle’s intimidating wingspan.  No, he was picturing a small bird on the cusp of flight, that breath of a moment between the intent to take off and the follow-through.

That pose done, Limewire started to shuffle his feet.  A hop here, a hop there, a shuffle shuffle slide.  And then he did it again, getting his ‘wings’ into it as well.  His head stayed half cocked, listening to the beat from the club, the beat always present in the back of his own mind, as they synced up perfectly and gave him a rhythm to dance to.

Limewire lost himself to the dance for a moment, feeling more alive than he had in weeks, at least.

When he finally stopped, with a flourish and a larger hop, as if he actually was about to take off, it was all he could do to resist cawing.  But he opened his eyes to see the birds all shuffling their feathers in appreciation.  But there was only one bird whose opinion truly mattered; Limewire peered at the bouncer.

A long moment during which the cat Iniki caught his breath—and then the raven nodded.  Limewire grinned and headed into the club to enjoy the rave.

Alice was just a lost child, and really the raven probably should have offered to help find her family instead of asking her to dance. However, being the daughter of a couple of street performers she was perfectly able and willing to be on her own and able to preform under the pressure.
Brandishing the wand with which she had been drawing words in the air to communicate thus far, she did a twirl. Ribbons of light erupted around her, joining her in the spin. After a couple swirls, she did a hop to the side. Her wand flicked about furiously, creating an animated drawing of a raven to join her in the dance.
Then she paused in her performance.
After some thought and a few more strokes of the wand, she herself had grown illusionary feathers and a beak…though they were all pink. She’d only mastered the colors of pink and blue as she was still a six year-old child after all.
Upon growing bright pink feathers, she did a little jiggle of her ‘tail’ and looked at the bouncer expectantly.

Saph didn’t need feathers to fit in; his sapphrine hide was perfectly stylish enough to catch the eye of every bird from the corner all the way to down the block - bird or otherwise. Giving the bouncer a tilted grin, the dras strick a pose he’d long mastered from years of modelling afterparties, when the crew cut loose and showed off their best dance moves. While Saph wasn’t actually a dancer, he could dance. A particular tilt of his head, lowering of long lashes, and shift of his hips, and he twirled into a dance move he’d practiced with Greg countless times. Said mortified Greg just stood off to the side and buried his head in his hands. Saph busting out dance moves on a street corner was not really the publicity they needed, but Saph did seem to be enjoying himself, the elegant swish of his tail making it clear he didn’t need feathers there to get attention, the tip flicking back dramatically as he sewpt back his hair and wings after a bit of fancy footwork.

Solace raises a paw to her chin in though.

A dance move? Well it would have to be something cool, it could be no less if was coming from her…Wait, ravens have wings, so that means… Her eyes light with realization before she backs up a couple of steps. “Alright then, try this one on for size! I call it the 360 corkscrew flip!” Solace tenses her leg before jumping backwards into a flip with her wings buzzing loudly as she rotates 3 time before landing front paws first back on the ground.

“Now let’s see if you do it!”

Auri nods thoughtfully and taps their paw against their chin as they ponder exactly what would impress the raven bouncer the most. Eyes gleaming with excitement, they decide on their course of action and swoop into motion. First, they twirl towards the right, stretching their golden- edged right wing out and letting it almost touch the floor of the cavern, while their left wing is stretched as high over their head as they can reach. They complete a half circle and swirl back the other way, dipping their left wing towards the ground this time while the right soars overhead. The edges of their wings glint golden and sparkles fly off the magically enchanted fireworks on their velvety black coat. They finish with a half jump that ends with a low bow, golden sparkles drifting gently down around them from their energetic movements.

The raven bouncer caws enthusiastically as they gesture Auri fowards into the club. Looks like the move was a hit!

“Ooh! Dance moves?! I got this!” Jenson exclaims and bursts out in a flurry of kicks and turns and fist pumps, but the bouncer gives him a puzzled look.

“This is ridiculous.” Tristan gripes. “Why are we trying to get into a rave with a bunch of crows, anyway?”

The bouncer begins to step forward and puff out his chest and looks about ready to tell them to scram when Tiernan interjects.

“Because ravens throw the best raves, man! Besides, Iggy and Rosin are busy, so what else were you gonna do tonight? Sit at home and mope?”

Tristan grumbles something under his breath, but his sentiment is immediately lost in the thrumming bass beating out from within the cavern.

“Alright, fellas.” The bouncer begins, sternly. “You’re holding up the line, so either you show me the goods or I show you the exit.”

“No problem!” Tiernan exclaims. “How about this?”

He raises his arms out to the side in a “T” pose and sticks his chest out. Then, to the beat of the music, he starts to flap his arms back and forth while gently hopping in place from foot to foot. The bouncer bobs his head in approval.

“I like it. You’re good. But I need to see it from your friends.”

He looks at Tristan and Jensen expectantly. Jensen immediately starts mimicking Tiernan’s movement, though, with a bit more recklessness, he swings his arms back and forth so wildly that he narrowly misses smacking the raven waiting patiently in line behind them. The raven takes a careful step back and eyes him warily.

The bouncer nods. “Good, good. And you?”

He looks at Tristan, who grumbles again, but begins to flap his arms and hop along with Jensen and Tiernan. The three of them flap together for a moment before the bouncer finally hums his approval and steps to the side of the entrance, clearing the path for them to proceed inside.

“Thanks, mate!” Tiernan shouts back at him as he quickly pushes himself and the two other ineki forward into the flashing lights and music. “C’mon, boys, let’s goooo!”

Begin standing on the ground, facing a partner. Then, to the beat of the music, swoop up and forward together. Next, still to the beat of the song and in time with your partner, swoop to the right, swoop to the back, swoop to the left, and swoop back to the front until you reach your starting positions. You should be moving in a box-like formation. That’s the Raven’s Waltz!

For more experienced waltzers, add a synchronized mid air twirl each time you swoop! You’ll be sure to dazzle the crowd.

Forgotten seems confused, at least all the way up until Lyric reaches the front of the line and puts on a show. Forgotten’s fur puffs up in excitement as she realizes that if all she needs to do to get in is to extend limbs and wiggle, then she has quite the advantage!

Several colorful limbs sprout from the cracks along her body, and begin to thrash in time to the music in the background. It isn’t graceful, or pretty, but the bouncer tells her to ‘go along with her friend before she wipes someone out’.

Forgotten bounces off after Lyric, excited to have made a new friend.

“…What.” Baskerville stated flatly, head stooping in line with his shoulders as he stared down at the puffed-up raven that was standing in front of him. To his consternation the bird neither moved nor appeared ruffled: instead it stared steadily back at him with bright, beady eyes, completely unbothered by his bulk or claws – or indeed by the way he’d uttered that single loaded word.

“It’s not hard, bud” the raven sighed, clearly growing frustrated – though whether with him or the ineki that’ve come before him, Baskerville has no way of knowing. “All you have to do is show me one little dance move.

“There is no way—”

The Hound paused, catching Lore’s hopeful-come-pleading look from the corner of his eye. It was the damned fox, as always, that had dragged him into this new bubble of nonsense, and as always Baskerville found himself caving to the puppy-dog stare that the Wisp always seemed to trot out at these times. Heaving a sigh—and wondering why he kept letting himself get into these situations—the Hound shuffled in a lumbering disorganised attempt at the four-step, his tail flickering irritably as he did. He concentrated hard, forehead furrowing as he tried to co-ordinate his oversized paws—ears slicked back at the indignity of it—and finally he turned in a tight too-slow circle – and stopped, facing the raven once more.

“Happy?”

“…”

The raven ruffled its feathers, abruptly looking disconcerted; letting its silence drag out until it began to become almost unbearably awkward. Beside him, Lore just stared, mouth hanging partly open as words, for once, entirely failed him. Then—

“I’ll just take him away, shall I?” The fox chirruped brightly, breaking the hush just as Baskerville was considering taking a swipe to get someone to talk. The raven flashed him a look that was almost manically grateful, beak bobbing in a rapid nod as it stated: “that would be best.”

Faris stares at the raven for a long moment before laughing sheepishly. A dance move? She hadn’t meant to be in this line in the first place, but - oh well. No sense in passing up the opportunity to see something new. She isn’t much of a dancer, admittedly, but she knows one ... not very rave-like, but it’s all she’s got.

“It might not be what you’re looking for, but what about this?”

Faris stands perfectly straight and raises her arms around an imaginary partner with her feet together. She pauses then brings her left foot forward, then her right foot in a curve forward and to the right, then brings her left foot in together. She waits a beat before repeating the process in reverse, bringing her right foot back, her left foot back and to the left, then bringing her right foot in together in a box step. Her movements are precise, if a bit stiff.

The raven looks at her and she looks back somewhat embarrassed, but he just sighs and waves her through. Good enough, she guesses!
