He was everything you would expect from a true samurai, honorable, loyal, courteous, courageous, just and true. Oh, and dashingly handsome, of course. It was simply a given that a rebellious young Kitsune would fall in love with him at first sight as a result. One never does anything by halves, after all, especially not when it comes to the deserving…
Chiyoko was a rebellious child of the fox spirits, curious as they always were with the mortal world. However, her family was ever proper about matters, reminding her frequently that she was far too young and inexperienced to go. She had so much yet to learn. So it was that in frustration, she ran away, certain as all teenagers are that she knew more than her elders. So confident was she in her own cleverness (as was only the truth for a Kitsune, after all), she didn’t even consider that she was trying to outwit other Kitsune, as clever and tricky as she, and considerably more experienced. It never even occurred to her that they actually wanted her to run away as she did…
Kamui was born to a family steeped in tradition and history, one where honor was valued above all. Born with a prophecy hanging over his head, he would defy that by taking up the sword of the samurai anyhow, proving himself to be just as adept as his late uncle in mastering and using it. So much so that many expected him to take his uncle’s name when he came of age as well, for it was all but given that he was his uncle reborn, was it not? In defiance of that as well, one of the few times he felt it was not improper to do so, he chose another name entirely, not wishing to live THAT much in his ancestor’s shadow. It was true that he was going to have to anyhow, but at least he could have his own name, this way…
Destiny has many threads, and the last time these intersected, dark forces nearly destroyed the story they were to weave. Pawns in a game they may have been, both wished to take on their lives on their own terms, as much as they could. And even if they were meant to be together, they would love each other for themselves instead of because that was the way their lives were meant to go. She loved him because he was Kamui, a kind, brave, and honorable samurai in his own right, and he loved her because she saw him for himself, and not in his uncle’s shadow.
It might be impossible to deny destiny, but you can make it your own…
