Huddled in the back corner of a research library in a tower in a town of mages laid a young magical researcher, flat on their back, hidden among the shelves and piles of books. Dressed in plain dark blue robes, they stared up at the ceiling, painted to resemble the night sky. They glanced over at a stack of papers covered in indecipherable mathematical formulas beside them, sighed, and then stared back up. Looking at the calming ceiling, they smiled slightly, and closed their eyes. Suddenly, a realization clicked in their mind, and they bolted upright. Concentrating, they held their hands out, creating a small jumble of floating golden runes, then spreading their hands apart and fixing them in positions, floating in a cylinder around them. They began interacting with the runes, glancing down at the paper every so often to double check a formula, before going back and playing with the runes to fit them back together. They stayed that way for the rest of the night, bathed in a dark blue light from the lamps, as they watched the runes glow softly in the air.

“Ow.”
K looked up from his work to see a colleague of his, N, holding her hand and carefully peering down at it. She blinked, before realizing that it was bleeding, and looked down at a strange magical contraption on the table, trying to determine which part of it she hurt herself on. It was a hard task, as the entire thing was made of bronze metal, and random sharp bits were poking out everywhere.
K sighed, shoved himself back from the table, and walked over to where N was standing. He grabbed her hand and waved his over it, using a flash of magic to heal the wound shut and clean it. Out of curiosity, before the magic faded he reached into it, trying to see what exactly it had cured, and frowned. As N reached back for the contraption he blocked her, and when she frowned at him, he glared.
“K, you caught tetanus from that thing. Tetanus. How do you even catch tetanus - we’re magical researchers! You shouldn’t even have a chance to contract diseases- ”
She cut him off and, with a flash of blue, purple, and golden magic, levitated the device into the air. She smirked at him. “Magical devices, K. If you’d paid any attention to my research into bronze at all, instead of wasting all of your time messing around with your silly healing magic, you’d know what I was doing.” She swept out of the room, the device following behind her, beginning to shoot out starry sparks and mutate slightly from the magical field. All K could do was stare.
“... but we’re librarians?”
“...your thesis is on combat magic, not metal?”

“...did you just steal my research journal??”

Somewhere deep in space, a small space station tumbles around, nestled in the cozy hold of an asteroid. That small space station, barely more than the size of a house, is clean and white, seemingly entirely scientific. However, there are small touches here and there that make it seem like a home; the most prominent of which is a small, sprouting potted plant on the center of a table, small and green and growing somehow, in the depths of a void nothing naturally grows in.
This station is home to a young astrophysicist slash astronaut, sent out to document the effects of growing up in a zero-gravity environment. Even though they are all on their own, they truly enjoy researching space, and are more than happy to spend their “days” doing science and their “nights” gazing out at the sky, attempting to make constellations from the stars they can see out their windows. Despite all their experience, they haven’t been able to see the one place they truly want to visit: at least one time, they want to go see the swirling center of a galaxy, and see its arms spiraling around, making lines towards a black hole in the center, drawing in all the light around.

Character Story:

What is good? What is evil? Life is a gray area. Vanessa knows this all too well. When she was a child, she was taught that there were good guys and bad guys. It was easy to tell who was who, because the bad guys were sinister looking. Generally with extra limbs or metal parts. Usually they wore dark colors or red. They were cold, and cruel and just overall bad. The good guys on the other hand were kind, normal folk. Sometimes extraordinary folk. They smiled, wore nice clothes. Always followed the rules and enforced them. Good always wins.

When Vanessa was ten, that’s when it started. She started gaining powers. Her parents couldn’t have been more proud. Her mother and father both had super powers and they were very pleased that their daughter would be following in their footsteps. One day when she was fifteen, she sprouted extra limbs, she had razor sharp spider instincts, her eyes turned red.. She stepped out on the street and greeted her neighbor, but she recoiled in fear and retreated back into the house. When she walked by the news stand, she went to wave at the guy selling the local paper, but she didn’t have control over her extra limbs yet, so she accidentally knocked over his stand. When she reached out to apologize and help, he ran away shouting “monster.”
Monster. Vanessa felt tears prick in her eyes. Not five minutes later, the man had returned with a group of people, most of them armed with makeshift weapons. They shouted, they pointed and they chased her. She scaled buildings to retreat, but they just kept coming, until she found herself cornered. She had no choice but to fight for her life, and so she did. She fought her way out and found sanctuary in an abandoned building, surrounded by rats, spiders and rubble.

Unable to return home, Vanessa made a home for herself there. She can sometimes be seen lurking the city at night. But do not fear this misunderstood creature. She never gave up on her dream of being a hero, so when you see her lurking, just know that she is watching out for you.

Cien

Ice is usually associated with the color blue, the color thought of as cool. Ice is usually thought of as cold and sharp; but ice is not only cold, nor only sharp. Ice can burn. Burn like fire. All it takes is a simple touch.

It freezes over your fingers, turning them numb one by one. Chills creep up your arms and wash over your spine invoking full body shivers. The cold burns you. Fingers hot and cold, freezing yet burning.

It engulfs you. And suddenly, you’re blue like ice and burn like fire. A single touch is all it takes to freeze, burn, hurt another. A curse or a gift, you ask, as a blue flame extends from your palm. You stare in wonder and awe, but also fear. Fear that you will not be accepted.

So you wander with your ice, your fire and find a kingdom. A kingdom made of frost and ice with a king made of fire. And suddenly you belong. You belong with the King of Fire and his Princess of Ice, the Frost Queen, the Northern Winds Prince. You find a place, a family. And you can finally believe, this was a gift.
